For decades the Polesine was sugar-beet country. This crop long shaped the landscape and economy of the area. Even today Britannica describes Rovigo as an agricultural market for wheat, sugar beet, flax and hemp. The former sugar factory on Viale Porta Adige is the monument to that industrial era. To understand the area, it is a valuable stop.
The factory
The complex was founded in the early 20th century by the Società Italiana per l’Industria degli Zuccheri, one of the country’s great sugar companies. For generations its processing campaigns set the rhythm of the city’s economic life. An important chapter of Rovigo’s economic history was written here. From field to factory, the beet cycle bound the Polesine countryside to the city for decades. Even now, the sheer size of the complex hints at how important it once was.
A new calling
Once production ended, the site was restored and transformed. A place of work became a place of encounter, one that now looks ahead. Today it is CenSer (Centro Servizi) – Rovigo Fiere, a multi-purpose venue for exhibitions, trade fairs, conferences, shows, cinema and workshops. Its spaces also host a cultural venture devoted to the visual and performing arts. The complex houses a university centre and accommodation for students of the Consorzio universitario di Rovigo, the city’s university consortium. Trade fairs, conferences and student residences thus share the same industrial volumes.
The Regione Veneto describes it as a complex “undergoing recovery and transformation”. It is a regeneration project still in progress, one that chose to give the area a “renewed calling” as a service hub rather than demolish. It is a way of looking to the future without erasing the past. It is an example of converted industrial heritage: where sugar beet was once processed, trade fairs, conferences and university courses now take place. Visiting during an event lets you grasp both sides of the place. The memory of sugar, after all, has not been lost: it lives on in the shape of the buildings and in their names.
